WORDHARVEST WRITERS WORKSHOPS

THE FOUNDERS, Jean Schaumberg and Anne Hillerman

About  WORDHARVEST:

WORDHARVEST was established in 2001 by two energetic Santa Fe women, Anne Hillerman and Jean Schaumberg.
A native Santa Fean, Jean Schaumberg has a life- long interest in books. Her career includes work as an acquisition and reference librarian, a bookstore owner and manager, and a writers’ conference coordinator, and work in development for a Santa Fe nonprofit.. WORDHARVEST  springs from her continued interest in the written word and the desire to promote it by assisting budding authors.
Anne Hillerman is a journalist, author, writing coach, freelance writer and avid reader. After a 25-year career in newspapers, including work as an editorial page editor, Anne and Jean launched WORDHARVEST  in 2001. Anne is the author of published four books including The Insiders’ Guide to Santa Fe and Children’s Guide to Santa Fe.  To read about Anne's Children's Guide to Santa Fe, click here.
Forthcoming books include a restaurant guide to Santa Fe, a  guide to beautiful gardens in the City Different, and a collaboration with her dad Tony Hillerman that highlights the landscapes in his mystery novels. Among her interests are memoir writing and personal stories. Anne will discuss mysteries at the Santa Fe Writers Conference July 21-25 www.santafewritersconference.com  and will be a participant in the inaugural New Mexico Women's Book Festival at Santa Fe's Milner Plaza Sept. 27, 2008. Come by and say hi!

One-Day Writing Programs:

These programs focus on a variety of topics and offer hands-on writing practice. Designed for those with limited time for writing workshops, these one-day workshops are held in the spacious home of a Santa Fe writer for a more relaxed environment. The one-day programs feature published writers who live in the Santa Fe area and enjoy teaching. Workshops are limited to 15 students.

The Tony Hillerman Writers Conference: Focus on Mystery:

Our conference  is held annually the first weekend  in November in  Albuquerque (N.M.) In addition to Hillerman, the dean of Southwest mystery writers, conferences have featured well-known writers Faye and Jonathan Kellerman, Michael McGarrity, David Morrell, Steve Brewer, J.A. Jance, Margaret Coel, James Doss, Craig Johnson, Pari Noskin Taichert, Sandi Ault  and Rebecca Eaton, executive producer of the PBS Mystery! series.  Since it’s inception we have joined forces with Cowboys & Indians magazine for the Tony Hillerman Mystery Short Story Contest.  In 2007 we were pleased to collaborate with St. Martin’s Press to award the inaugural Hillerman Prize for best first mystery.

Hillerman-McGarrity Scholarhip Fund:

In November of 2005, during the Tony Hillerman Writers Conference, author Michael McGarrity suggested that a creative writing scholarship be established in Tony's name to honor him for his service to students, writers, and the people of  New Mexico. It was decided to establish the scholarship at the College of Santa Fe, where both Hillerman and McGarrity once taught. Hillerman suggested that the scholarship should be in McGarrity’s name as well, so it is officially the Hillerman-McGarrity Creative Writing Scholarship. Fundraising is underway.
TThe scholarship is  awarded is based on talent and need, not GPA,  and preference is  given to New Mexico residents.

Our home town: Santa Fe!

Nestled in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains at an elevation of 7,000 feet, Santa Fe has attracted visitors since the first Spanish settlers arrived in the early 17th century. Among the city’s attractions are its historic Plaza, Loretto Chapel which houses the famous spiral staircase and the Palace of the Governors, the oldest continually inhabited public building in the U.S. Santa Fe is famous for its great restaurants and fine art galleries. And don’t forget the weather --- sunny days and star-filled nights are the norm here. Only an hour’s drive from the Albuquerque International Sunport, Santa Fe combines small town charm with big city amenities.
