MYSTERY SHORT STORY CONTEST
In conjunction with the Tony Hillerman Writers Conference:
Focus on Mystery - Nov.1-4, 2007 Tony Hillerman Mystery Short Story
Contest $1500 CASH PRIZE and PUBLICATION
CONTEST GUIDELINES:
What we are looking for:
We want your very best mystery short story, set in the Western or
Southwestern United States. The story must include at least one
cowboy and/or Native American character. We’re looking for
compelling, original, well-written stories that have not been previously
published. This contest is jointly sponsored by COWBOYS & INDIANS
MAGAZINE and WORDHARVEST.
Theme –
All entries must be mystery short stories set in the West or Southwest
and feature at least one cowboy or one Native American character.
Submission details
-
Submit mystery short stories that are 2,500 words or less, written
in English. The story must be previously unpublished. Submission
must be typed, single-sided, double-spaced. Please use page numbers
and the story title ONLY on each page. Submissions must include
a separate cover sheet with title, word count, writer’s name,
address, phone number and email.
The Fee –
Each entry must be accompanied by a check or money order for $10
U.S. made out to WORDHARVEST. Multiple entries by the same writer
are allowed. Critiques are available for an additional $100. (Please
include as SASE) The critique process is separate from the judging
and has no bearing on the result.
Deadline -
All entries must be postmarked no later than Sept. 15, 2007. The
winner will be announced at the Tony Hillerman Writers Conference:
Focus on Mystery, Nov. 1-4, 2007. (You don’t have to attend
the conference to enter.)
The Prize –
The winning story will receive a cash prize of $1500 and will be
published in an upcoming issue of Cowboys & Indians Magazine.
The winner also receives two tickets to the keynote banquet at the
Tony Hillerman Writers Conference: Focus on Mystery, in Albuquerque,
N.M. on November 3, 2007.

Decision of the judges is final. No whining allowed. Please make
a copy: entries will be returned only if accompanied by a SASE and
sufficient postage is provided. We will use the email address to
contact the winner(s). Please notify us of any changes in your contact
information. Winner will be posted on the conference website: www.hillermanconference.com
